Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Hummel, speaks to McBee Elementary School about the importance and proper steps to take if a student finds a gun.
On Wednesday, October 18, 2023, McBee Elementary School and the United States Attorney’s Office partnered up to observe the 2023 Day of National Concern About Young People and Gun Violence. Students in grades 1st through 5th heard from the guest speaker, Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Hummel, who shared the importance and proper steps to take if a student finds a gun. She also shared a video about gun safety. Our 1st-5th grade students also recited and signed a pledge stating, “I Pledge If I see a gun, I won’t touch it. I will remember that any gun I see might be loaded. I know how important it is to keep myself safe.” This program has given our community the opportunity to talk with the students about school gun violence, responsible choices, and good decision-making. In addition to Ms. Hummel speaking, we had Chesterfield County Sheriff's Department Officer Larry Brown, McBee Police Chief Michael Irvin, and the Chesterfield County School District’s Chief of Student Services and Administration Dr. Omoro King. They each focused on gun safety and how to follow those steps to ensure that students and community members are safe!
